Active Schools
At CBS Primary, we are committed to fostering a healthy, active lifestyle for all pupils. As part of our journey towards achieving the Active School Flag, we actively promote physical activity across four key areas: Physical Education, Physical Activity, Partnerships, and Active School Week.
Physical Education (PE)
Physical Education is a vital part of school life and is carefully planned to ensure all pupils develop a wide range of skills and confidence in movement. Our PE programme follows a structured curriculum that includes games, athletics, gymnastics, dance, and outdoor activities. Each class has a scheduled PE timetable, ensuring regular, consistent participation. Lessons are designed to be inclusive, engaging, and progressive, allowing pupils to build on their skills year by year. We also provide a variety of lesson experiences, from fundamental movement skills in the infant classes to team-based games and strategy development in senior classes.
Physical Activity (PA)
We believe physical activity should extend beyond PE lessons and be part of the everyday school experience. Throughout the day, pupils are encouraged to stay active through initiatives such as active breaks in the classroom, playground games, and movement-based learning. We also promote creative approaches like “active homework,” where pupils complete fun physical challenges at home. Our aim is to ensure every child has opportunities to move, play, and develop healthy habits throughout the school day.
Partnerships
Strong partnerships are key to supporting physical activity in our school community. We work closely with our school community, encouraging involvement in school initiatives and promoting active lifestyles at home. We also maintain links with local sports clubs and community organisations, giving pupils opportunities to engage in a variety of activities outside school. Visiting coaches and external providers regularly support our PE programme, introducing new skills and sports while enhancing our children's experiences.
Active School Week (ASW)
Active School Week is now a highlight of our school calendar, it is a dedicated week celebrating fun, movement, and participation. During this week, children take part in a wide range of activities such as sports races, dance sessions, fitness challenges, and themed activity days. It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the importance of physical activity, with plenty of photos and events capturing the energy and enthusiasm of our pupils. Active School Week brings the whole school community together in a shared celebration of movement and wellbeing.
